Illustration Auctions -

At a time when a debate was gently raging within the art world as to whether commercial illustration should even be called “art” (the thought that it wouldn’t be is now viewed as preposterous). Guernsey’s produced the first illustration auctions. With works by such great artists as Norman Rockwell and J.C. Leyendecker, these pioneering auctions have often been credited for opening people’s eyes towards the importance of illustration.

The Baseball Auction -

One of the most coveted marks in the annals of auction records is that of the most spent for a single baseball. Only months after the world’s largest auction house boasted of selling a ball for the then record setting $126,000, Guernsey’s held a baseball auction at Madison Square Garden. Two balls in that event sold for the then remarkable amounts of $1 million each, but the “Star of the Show” was a ball we sold for $3 million, or twenty times the previous world record amount. Astounding!

The Presidential Auction -

This comprehensive auction focusing on the Presidency not only included treasure items from John F. Although the President obviously didn’t care for the work, we sold it to the National Portrait Gallery.
