East 161st Street and River Avenue in The Bronx. The address doesn't sound imposing until you realize that it is the home of the Bronx Bombers, "The House that Ruth Built"... the field loved by millions (and despised by millions more). This is Yankee Stadium.
The closing of Yankee Stadium ends an era in sports that never could possibly be duplicated. In celebration of the remarkable achievements that occurred within the Stadium's massive three decks, Guernsey's is conducting the Auction of the Baker Collection, a remarkable assemblage of historic documents relating to Yankee Stadium and the New York Yankees. Imagine bidding on one of the 160 beautiful original architectural drawings used in 1921 to build the Stadium and critical changes in the 30's and 40's! Or the Insurance policy taken out by the Yankees with Lloyd's of London to protect the well being of Lou Gehrig and Babe Ruth.
As if the Baker Collection isn't enough to thrill any fan of the boys in Pinstripes, throw into the Auction extraordinary items signed, worn or used by Ruth, Gehrig, DiMaggio and Mantle. Throw into the Auction a baseball given by Don Larsen on the day of his perfect game to the photographic editor responsible for the famous shot of Yogi celebrating. Throw into the Auction a number of Yankee World Championship rings. And because a great team would hardly be such without great opponents, the Auction will include perhaps the single most extraordinary Boston Red Sox item imaginable....their 1912 World Series Trophy!
As with Guernsey's landmark Mickey Mantle and Mark McGwire Auctions, this event will be held live at NYC's Madison Square Garden ("The World's Most Famous Arena") on Saturday, October 18th. A handsome catalogue is in the works and available from Guernsey's. To order the catalogue, find out more details about the historic objects being sold or discuss the possibility of placing your extraordinary items in this unprecedented Auction, please contact Guernsey's.
