Clark "Mumbles" Terry

Clark Terry is best known as a star trumpet soloist in Duke Ellington’s orchestra during the 1950s, as co-leader of a small combo with trombonist Bob Brookmeyer, and as one of the funniest men in jazz, particularly for his “mumbling” musical comedy routines, in which his vocalizations balance on a knife edge between imitating instrumental sounds with nonsense syllables (scat-singing) and delivering a spoken monologue, the one blending into the other.

Presented in this auction are his Stradivarius Model 43 Trumpet. This trumpet was created especially for Terry with a finger hook on the left-side – enabaling him to play the trumpet left-handed.

Also included in this event are a large collection of vintage photographs of some of the best known names in jazz, many autographed with inscriptions.
